While the Organisation and others have progressed to higher skills such as nail surgery and biomechanics, which are more appropriate to private practice, the National Executive are adamant that the Chiropody/Podiatry profession must regard the Public Health sector which includes the elderly as a priority treatment category of patients.
According to most recent figures obtained from the Central Statistics Office there are now 3,917,203 at the ages of 5 and over. The enderly population are the most vulnerable in our society, and thousands of people cannot deal with their own foot conditions such as nails etc. due to the ageing process, systemic conditions, failing sight, arthritis, diabetes, degeneration tissues and fat pads over the bones etc.
